How the test works

Your reaction has a distance

Your car carries on at full speed for as long as you take to react, all before the brakes contribute anything. That is thinking distance, and it scales directly with speed: 100 km/h means nearly 28 metres every second, so a 250 ms reaction burns almost 7 metres before you touch the pedal.

At 50 km/h on a residential street, that same 250 ms reaction eats about 3.5 metres. At 130 km/h it runs past 9 metres before your foot even moves, which is why an identical lapse in attention grows more dangerous the faster you travel.

Braking distance gets added on top for real stopping distance, but the thinking part is the only piece reaction time governs, and it is why staying alert behind the wheel counts for so much. Head to the average reaction time page to see how your number stacks up.

What is thinking distance?
The distance your vehicle travels between a hazard appearing and you starting to brake, which is simply your reaction time multiplied by your speed. Braking distance is a separate thing: how far you travel while actually slowing down.
What is a good brake reaction time?
On this test, under about 280 ms marks you as alert and dependable, and under 220 ms is excellent. Expect slower numbers in real traffic, where hazards are less obvious and your foot still has to reach the pedal.
Why does speed matter so much?
Thinking distance scales directly with speed. Travel twice as fast and the same reaction time carries you twice as far, which is why an identical reaction is far more dangerous on a motorway than on a side street.
Is this how driving tests measure reaction?
The thinking-distance principle behind it is the same one taught in driver theory, though this remains a simplified simulation. Let it show you the physics rather than stand in for real driver training.
