How the test works

Your reaction has a distance

Before the brakes do anything, your car keeps moving at full speed for as long as it takes you to react. That's thinking distance, and it scales directly with speed: at 100 km/h you cover nearly 28 metres every second, so a 250 ms reaction is almost 7 metres gone before you touch the pedal.

At 50 km/h — a residential street — the same 250 ms reaction covers about 3.5 metres. At 130 km/h it's over 9 metres before your foot even moves, which is why the same lapse in attention gets more dangerous the faster you're going.

Real stopping distance adds braking distance on top — but the thinking part is the only bit reaction time controls, and it's why staying alert behind the wheel matters so much. See how your number compares on the average reaction time page.

What is thinking distance?
The distance your vehicle travels between a hazard appearing and you starting to brake — purely your reaction time multiplied by your speed. It is separate from braking distance, which is how far you travel while actually slowing down.
What is a good brake reaction time?
Under about 280 ms on this test is alert and dependable, and under 220 ms is excellent. Real-world driving is slower because hazards are less obvious and your foot has to travel to the pedal.
Why does speed matter so much?
Because thinking distance scales directly with speed. Double your speed and you cover double the distance in the same reaction time, which is why the same reaction is far more dangerous on a motorway than a side street.
Is this how driving tests measure reaction?
It uses the same thinking-distance principle taught in driver theory, but it is a simplified simulation. Use it to appreciate the physics, not as a substitute for real driver training.
