How the test works
The oldest benchmark there is
One thing gets measured by the simple reaction time test: how long you take to respond to a signal you already expect. While a random delay of 1.5 to 5 seconds counts down, the panel stays red — and that randomness is exactly what stops you anticipating the switch. A hidden clock starts the instant it turns green, and stops the instant you click.
Five runs, then we take the median, not the average. Your number shouldn't hinge on one lucky click or one distracted round, and the middle value reads your true speed far more honestly.

What does reaction time actually measure?
The gap between a signal appearing and your response beginning. On this test that means the milliseconds between the screen turning green and your finger pressing down, covering the whole chain: seeing the change, deciding to act, firing the muscles. A genuine reflex such as a knee-jerk skips conscious processing and runs faster, but a reaction is voluntary, and that is why it cannot drop below about 100 ms.
What is a good reaction time?
On a visual click test like this one, most people fall between 200 and 300 ms. Beating 250 ms puts you above average, and a median under 200 ms leaves roughly 87% of the population behind you. Get below about 175 ms and you are in top-6% territory.
What is the average human reaction time?
The median on the curve this site grades against is about 273 ms, a figure that already absorbs the 20-50 ms of display and input lag every browser test inherits. That 250 ms number you see quoted so often comes from lab studies without such overhead. Sound produces quicker reactions, at roughly 170 ms.
Is 200 ms a good reaction time?
Yes. A median of 200 ms beats about 87% of people. At roughly 170 ms you are knocking on the top 5%, and even 250 ms sits a touch above average. Bear in mind that one lucky 200 ms round proves less than you would hope: run all five and trust the median.
What is the fastest reaction time ever recorded?
There is no official world record, because human biology caps a genuine reaction. Against the gun, sprinters at world championships average 120-160 ms, and World Athletics calls any start under 100 ms a false start on the grounds that it has to be anticipation. Same reasoning applies here, which is why this test voids anything under 80 ms rather than scoring it.
How can I improve my reaction time?
Sleep is the biggest lever, with a well-rested night worth roughly 20-30 ms over a sleep-deprived one. A few practice rounds as a warm-up add another 7-13 ms, and moderate caffeine about 10-20 ms. Practice on one specific test pays off early, then plateaus. Nothing trains you past the roughly 100 ms biological floor.
Why is my reaction time so slow?
Usually the conditions rather than your nervous system. Testing tired or cold costs real milliseconds, and hardware compounds it: a wired mouse on a fast monitor can measure 20-50 ms quicker than a trackpad on a 60 Hz screen before either person has actually reacted. Age contributes too, around 2-4 ms a year past the mid-twenties. Retest rested and warmed up before you conclude anything.
Why does it say “jump start” when I click?
You clicked while the panel was still red, ahead of the green signal. That counts as anticipation rather than reaction, so the round is voided and restarts on a fresh random delay.
Why the median of five instead of my best round?
Your single best click is usually a lucky outlier. Taking the median discards the flukes at both ends and leaves the speed you can genuinely repeat.
How is the timing so precise?
The green signal gets stamped at the exact frame your screen paints it, and your click is caught on pointerdown, both off the browser high-resolution clock. A little unavoidable latency still comes from your display and mouse.
