How the test works

Centimetres in, milliseconds out

This is the ruler test every physics class runs, made exact. A dropped object accelerates under gravity at 9.81 m/s², so the distance it falls is tied to the time it has been falling by d = ½gt² — and nothing else. Not its weight, not its size. Only time.

That means the centimetre reading and the millisecond reading are two views of the same number, genuinely convertible rather than decorative. Catch the ruler at 12 cm and you reacted in about 156 ms; let it run to 25 cm and you took roughly 226 ms. The lower you catch it, the slower you were.

We measure the millisecond, not the centimetre. The clock starts at the frame the ruler is released and stops on your click, exactly as in every other test here — then the distance is computed from that time. Doing it the other way round would make your score depend on your screen's frame rate, which would be a worse measurement pretending to be a better one.

Five catches, and your score is the median. Grab before the release and it is a false start; let the ruler fall clean through and you missed it. Either way the round is voided and replayed.

How can centimetres tell me milliseconds?
Gravity accelerates the ruler at a fixed 9.81 m/s². Because the distance fallen depends only on time, the two are locked together by t = √(2d/g). Where you catch the ruler determines exactly how long it was falling.
Why is my catch distance different every time?
That is the point — it tracks your reaction. A quicker catch means the ruler fell less far, so a smaller centimetre reading is a faster time. We take the median of five to smooth out the odd fumble.
Does this match a real ruler test?
Yes. Our on-screen ruler falls by the same equation a physical ruler obeys, so a screen result and a classroom result are directly comparable — with the caveat that a screen and mouse add a little latency a falling piece of plastic does not.
Why did a drop not count?
If you click before the ruler is released, that is a false start. If the ruler falls its full length without a catch, you missed it. Either way the round is voided and repeats, so neither can flatter your score.
