How the test works

Reaction, not anticipation

This is exactly how a real Formula 1 start runs. Five red light pairs illuminate a second apart. The system then holds, anywhere from two-tenths of a second to a few full seconds, before all five go dark together. Drivers launch on lights-out, and a random hold means they cannot time it. They have to react.

What makes the test hard is that inverted cue. Every other test here has you waiting for something to appear. This one has you waiting for something to vanish, with five bright lights sitting in your vision daring you to go early.

Move before lights-out and it is a jump start, just as on the grid. So is any launch inside 100 ms of lights-out, which beats the time a human needs to process the signal and therefore counts as anticipation rather than reaction. Either way the launch is voided and replayed, never counting toward your five.

What is an F1 driver's reaction time?
Formula 1 itself puts the grid average from lights-out to launch at about 200 ms, with real starts commonly spanning 200 to 250 ms. Exceptional single launches have been reported in the 150-180 ms range. Break 200 ms here and your raw reaction genuinely sits in the drivers' bracket, minus the clutch work and the pressure.
Why is the hold before lights-out random?
That is exactly how the real system works. A fixed delay would let you time the launch and strip out the reaction altogether. Holding for a random 0.2 to 3 seconds forces a genuine reaction to lights-out.
What counts as a jump start here?
Any move before the lights go dark, or a launch quicker than 100 ms after them. Under 100 ms beats the time a human needs to process the signal, making it anticipation rather than reaction. The launch is voided and the round replays, mirroring the real-world penalty for leaving early.
Why is my F1 time slower than my classic click time?
Reacting to something disappearing is harder than reacting to something appearing, and those five lit lights actively bait you into going early. Most people do come in a little slower here, which is the test working as intended.
Do the lights matter to my score?
Only as pressure. Your clock starts at the frame the lights actually go out, and nothing else about the sequence feeds into your time. The lights are there because the real start has them, not because they are measured.
