How the test works
Four tenths of a second to decide
A 95 mph fastball covers the 60 feet from mound to plate in roughly 400 milliseconds. In that sliver a batter must read the pitch, decide to swing, and start the bat — which is why hitting a baseball is often called the single hardest skill in sport. Elite hitters don't react faster than you; they read the pitcher's release earlier.
This test is pure timing: your score is how close your swing lands to the perfect moment, in either direction. The occasional changeup punishes anyone who settles into a rhythm — just like the real thing.

Is this reaction time or timing?
Timing. Unlike a reaction test, swinging early is penalized just like swinging late — your score is how close you land to the perfect contact moment in either direction.
How do real hitters manage it?
They anticipate. Elite batters read the pitcher's arm slot and release point to predict the pitch before it arrives, effectively starting their swing early rather than reacting faster than everyone else.
What is the changeup for?
To stop you from memorizing the rhythm. Every so often a slower pitch arrives; if you've locked into the fastball timing, you'll swing too early — exactly how off-speed pitches fool real hitters.
