How the test works
Four tenths of a second to decide
Sixty feet from mound to plate takes a 95 mph fastball roughly 400 milliseconds. A batter has to read the pitch, decide to swing, and start the bat inside that sliver, which is why hitting a baseball gets called the single hardest skill in sport. Elite hitters aren't out-reacting you; they simply read the pitcher's release earlier.
What this test measures is pure timing: how close your swing lands to the perfect moment, in either direction. Settle into a rhythm and the occasional changeup will punish you, exactly as it does in the real thing.

Release to plate takes about 400 milliseconds. Inside that window a hitter has to recognize the pitch, decide to swing, and get the bat moving, which makes it one of the hardest reactions in sport.
Is this reaction time or timing?
Timing. A reaction test wouldn't punish you for going early, but this one does, exactly as it punishes going late. Your score is how near you land to the perfect contact moment in either direction.
How do real hitters manage it?
They anticipate. Reading the pitcher's arm slot and release point lets elite batters predict the pitch before it arrives, so they effectively start the swing early rather than out-reacting everyone else.
What is the changeup for?
To stop you from memorizing the rhythm. A slower pitch turns up every so often, and if you've locked into fastball timing you will swing too early. That is precisely how off-speed pitches fool real hitters.
